This year, Ukraine is celebrating the 200th anniversary of Nikolay Gogol. His name is pronounced along with the names of such great classics as Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoyevskiy, Chekhov. The great Ukrainian novelist was a founder of critical realism in Russian literature of XIX century. His best novels are “Dead souls”, “Taras Bulba”, “Viy”, “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”.

Gogol’s prose is characterized with imaginative power and linguistic playfulness, showing the merits and the defects of human character.

The year of 2009 is proclaimed the year of N. Gogol, so a wide circle of events has been planned to commemorate the memory of the writer.

On April 1, a festival of modern art called “GogolFest” will be opened on the motherland of Gogol in the village Gogolevo of Poltava Region. The program includes: excursions of Gogol’s house, night theater performance by the center of modern art “Dah” and ethno-chaos brand “Daha Braha”.

On September, 5-27th, the festival will be holding in the “Art Arsenal” of “Lavra” Gallery with the numerous theatre, music and visual programs. About 20 countries have already approved their participation on the festival.

Among main events, holding during the year there are literature contest, concerts, show of movie about Gogol, presentation of the new popular science movie “Gogol street”, opening of Gogol Monument in Mirgorod, and other.
