THE SUMMER WORK/TRAVEL EXCHANGE PROGRAM
The U.S. Department of State created the Summer Work/Travel Program to provide bona fide foreign post-secondary students an opportunity to become directly involved in the daily life of the people of the United States through travel and temporary work for a period up to four months during their summer vacation. The U.S. Department of State administers the Exchange Visitor Program under the provisions of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, as amended. The Department of State designates U.S. organizations to administer exchange programs in several categories. These organizations are known as sponsors.
Summer Work Travel Jobs
Most of the time, participants work in unskilled service positions at resorts, hotels, restaurants, and amusement parks. However, they may also work in other types of organizations. For example, they could work in architectural firms, scientific research organizations, graphic art/publishing and other media communication businesses, advertising agencies, computer software and electronics firms, legal offices, etc. The program may not exceed four-months and must be finished during the student's summer vacation. Participants receive pay and benefits equal to an American working in the same or similar position.
Documents needed
The basic document used in the administration of the exchange visitor program is Form DS-2019 or “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status”. Each program participant is issued a DS-2019 form. This form permits a prospective exchange visitor to seek an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate in order to obtain a J visa to enter the United States.
The Form DS-2019 identifies the exchange visitor and their designated sponsor and provides a brief description of the exchange visitor’s program, including the start and end date, category of exchange, and an estimate of the cost of the exchange program.
